Mass Concrete Curing Cooling for Bridge Construction
Industry: Construction
Project Challenge
During the construction of a massive bridge pier, the heat generated by the curing of mass concrete posed a significant risk of thermal cracking, which could compromise structural integrity. The challenge was to implement a cooling system to effectively control the concrete's core temperature during the entire curing process.
Solution Provided
A post-cooling system was designed where chilled water was circulated through a network of pipes embedded within the concrete structure before the pour. We deployed high-capacity industrial water chillers on-site to supply a continuous flow of 5°C water. Temperature sensors embedded in the concrete provided real-time data to the chiller control system, allowing for precise temperature management.
Project Results
The system successfully maintained the temperature differential between the core and the surface of the concrete within the specified limits. No thermal cracking occurred, ensuring the structural integrity and long-term durability of the bridge pier. The project was completed ahead of schedule due to the reliable curing process.
